There don’t seem to be any really good e-commerce content management systems that are also free. EZpublish looks pretty good. It is primarily a CMS but has e-commerce functionality as well. As far as the big two CMS’s go, Drupal (using Ubercart) and Joomla (using Virtuemart), I can’t recommend either one for a complicated e-commerce store, though they would be okay for a basic one. If you plan on storing any of the user’s data in them, I would think twice about using an e-commerce solution that isn’t backed by a dedicated company that has a responsibility to keep user credit card and other personal information secure. You would be best off choosing a paid cart from a company that has a record for addressing security issues quickly. If you are willing to spend a few dollars on your shopping cart X-Cart and SunShop are pretty good and inexpensive shopping carts with good companies behind them. Feel free to message me if you have other questions.
