Whats the best e-commerce software that allows fully customizable features?

What is the recommended e-commerce software I should use to add to my custom website template, so that my customers can create an account, and make a shopping cart, and pay with their credit cards on my site? example: frozencpu.com see how their shopping cart is all integrated on the site, with custom colors buttons and etc. was this completely custom, or is it software that I can edit? Is this also possible with papal with a business account, if yes where do I go to do this?

The best shopping cart is the one you write yourself. (If you download it and can’t read the code, how do you know that, hidden away in some obscure file, the software doesn’t email the author all your customers’ credit card info?)

    Hi Rob,

Ron’s done a good job with a complete list. I just wanted to add a few things incase they help.

If you want to finely control the look of your store to match an existing site, from experience I would think twice about Ubercart (i love drupal but not Ubercart)

Magento is another cart to look at seriously. It’s relatively young, but maturing quickly.
Other carts like OS commerce have been around for too long and have old style code bases with a few bells and whistles added on.

I’ve been using CS-cart for a year and have had a few issues it, but nothing bad enough to make me want to go back to any of the others i’ve used or tried developing on. It’s a bit of over kill for some people’s needs because it’s full of features. It’s also worth investigating if you have the time.

In response to your question about frozencpu.com, most shopping carts have some type of theme engine to seperate the programming logic (the skeleton) from the business logic (the muscles) and presentation logic (skin) This means often you can change the way your site looks by changing some image files and CSS values inside the theme. Some carts have a huge choice of themes(skins) either for free or around the $60-$120

A final word of advice… read the forums of any carts you are seriously considering to help you understand how well they are upported by the developers and the community that use it. You will also learn about the weaknesses and shortfalls which can save you a lot of time and possibly money in the long run.

    All the best!
