What is bandwidth? Is it basically the amount of traffic a Web site gets?
When searching for a web host, what would you say would be a good bandwidth to look for?
Specifically for a small business online t-shirt shop just starting out on the web that has 50 different shirts to choose from.

The Bandwidth of a web server typically refers to the rate of data transfer. Data transfer rate is usually measured in bits/s or Megabits/s.
I would have to agree with the previous answerer though. If you’re looking at a start-up with 50 t-shirts and you’re not expecting a lot of traffic, you could probably host it off of your home pc (don’t). You can safely ignore this as a requirement.

I need to clarify as some of the other answerers seem to be confused. Bandwidth is *not* the amount of traffic a site can handle. It is a data transfer rate or bit rate. However, the bit transfer rate is related to the amount of simultaneous requests (net traffic) that your site can handle. The higher the bandwidth, the more traffic is possible. This is assuming a linear system with no proxy servers or load distribution.
I would not worry about bandwidth with making a site like that. However, bandwidth is the channel capacity, or how many people can be on your site at the same time. It sometimes also refers to the monthly limit on how much your site can upload/download data.

2) you shouldn’t worry about bandwidth right now. If you start selling hundreds of different designs and implementing flash for one or more pages, then concider looking into hosting with higher bandwidth
Actually, bandwidth is the amount of traffic a website can handle. Sorry, I don’t know the answer to your other question. I’m not really a techie, I just remembered that little bit of info from my intro to computers class in university.
Yeah, in a way it is the amount of visitors who visit your site but it is acutally the total data transfer from your website per month.
