What is a good site to host domains?

I just recently got my first domain name and I am not familiar with all the different hosting sites out there. What company is good and reliable for hosting domains, particularly for someone starting out and not familiar with programming? I heard of GoDaddy, are they any good? And should I go with Linux or Windows hosting? Thanks.

If you’re a beginner I recommend http://www.hosttell.com/one They are one of the leading European web hosting companies, currently hosting over 500 000 websites. They have plans starting from $1.45/month. Every plan includes Photo Gallery, WebEditor (so you can build a website without knowledge of HTML), Google Adwords coupon (so you can advertise your website on google for free) and a lot more. Check them out.

Personally I use http://www.x9hosting.com which provides a great started solution. But if you want hardcore hosting services for high bandwidth and no downtime, I recommend http://www.mediatemple.com as they provide a professional solution for hosting.

As for linux and windows, I would pick Linux because it most common and more reliable. I’ve used linux for web hosting forever and I’ve never had an issue ;)

Godaddy and 1an1 are good places for registering domain names, not for web hosting services. Since you have already purchased your domain otherwise the best way to buy a domain for free is to purchase your domain and webhosting together. In this way it is possible to get your domain for free. Some webhosting companies offer this as a gift . I am using hostmonster webhosting for mine.

It’s a hard question, many of the cheap hosts have many loopholes that can screw you over. And I bet at least half the answers here are from advertisers of the site. Also don’t be fooled by top10 lists they are also fake. If you’re gona have a little website with not too many people seeing it everyday I would recommend Yahoo web hosting, you can trust them. They aren’t as cheap but reliable. And if you want to host a business site they’re great.

Try http://pAsM-Networks.com , The plans start really low because you have your own Domain, We also run cPanel which gives you just about all the features you will ever need.

All websites today currently run on either a Windows web server or a Linux-based server. The vast majority of websites run on a Linux-based platform as Linux has a strong reputation for security and web server performance. With standard (static) HTML-based websites, the web hosting platform doesn’t make much difference. When it does make a difference, however, is when the website uses a dynamic scripting technology such as ASP (A Microsoft based technology), or PHP / PERL (Linux based technologies). A Windows-based hosting solution will run a Microsoft Windows server with IIS (Internet Information Server), and is necessary to run an ASP / ASP.NET scripted website. A Linux-based platform is typically used for PHP, Perl, and most other types of websites. Basically, unless your website uses ASP (pages ending in the .asp extention), Windows hosting is not neccessary.

I don’t recommend Godaddy because it is not a userfriendly service.

As an experienced webmaster I recommend BlueHost service which I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer for hosting & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them.

They offer a Full-featured service only $6.95 a month. Their service is really perfect and uptime.
