I believe you are putting the cart before the mule so to speak. It is very possible to learn to program via books if you are accustomed to that sort of mental engineering. The O’Rielly Cookbooks are very popular and recommended by many guru’s of several different languages. But to answer the first part of your question I would recommend the following.
Find a popular e-commerce solution and determine what Framework it is developed in and focus on learning that. A framework is a sort of specialized set of modules that allow development of applications in a more swift manner.
Determine what your actual goal is. You would like to create an e-commerce application but why. What would your application do which will be unique.
To create something as large (or as small) as an e-commerce application takes lots of time and dedication, even if you do not plan to release it publicly.
