How do I create an e-commerce site?

I’ve been studying web design for four years now, and I want to create a portfolio. Before I do, I want to expand my knowledge. However, I was wondering how I would go about creating a e-commerce site for someone? Do I need to buy software or is there coding involved or both? I use Dreamweaver, so how would that work together?
The entire point of CREATING is using code. I don’t want a site builder. I want something that just does the e-commerce part of it.

go to adobe exchange extensions (you can find the link within your dreamweaver program) from there you can find cart extensions that work within dreamweaver (you will probably find hundreds to choose from so just do research on which on works for you (they have demos). simple ones would be adding paypal basic cart buttons (free) then you have more complex like custom shopping cart (which can start at $100 and higher)
