I wanna start a portal for AUCTION based business.

with a book to explain and modify for content

I was wondering about the different types of security threats around the internet, e.g. Virus’ and fraud, and how you would stop them getting into your computer.

site comes with a complete 40,000+ item online catalog and complete 24/7 customer service. allows about 10 custom contract capablilites, product searches, shopping lists, shopping carts, etc.
i would not have to touch the site, hardly at all. i think the company that has this site will do most all of the work for me. all i have to do is to tell them the info they are to put in and poof . . . 7 days later it’s ready to go. it’s offered by my a company that works with my wholesaler.

I’m trying to create a website. The purpose of it is to be able to sell anywhere from 1 to 5 products. I’ve done some research on html and have somewhat picked it up, but what I want the site to be may require me to have an even greater understanding of html (which I don’t mind, but don’t have the time). Anyways, what I really need is some advice/suggestions on how to go about with the creation of the website. First of all, since it’s an e-commerce site, would I be able to create the site on notepad or do I need some sort of software like Dreamweaver? In addition, since I’m going to want to take down customer information, would working on notepad allow me to? Second, I’m looking to use PayPal as my primary source for transactions, so would I still need to go about selecting a shopping cart, and if so, what kind would be good? Since I’m going to be selling products, are there other details that I have overlooked (i.e. security for personal information, etc.)? If there are any other steps that I may need to take, those would be helpful as well. Thank you in advance.

I am a desktop programmer, I only know bits and pieces about web development (php, asp.net). I am looking to create a reliable e-commerce website. I wonder if any expert web developer here can give me a good input on where to start?

Should I:
1. Use Joomla and use component like Virtuemart? (I’ve done a lightweight website using some component before, but do professional web developers use Joomla for a more serious client?)
2. Develop using php from scratch? (is this very difficult? I only know basic php at the moment)
3. Use ASP.Net? I use c# for my desktop application a lot.
4. Other suggestions?

I have been doing websites as a hobby and want to get a little more pro an pick a CMS and e-commerce package to get really good with. Does anyonw know a good pair to use? Or does the cart handle CMS? I am looking mostly for the best usability for my end users and feature rich as well. If you answer will you give a small bit as to why you recommend what you do?
